Overview
Wegovy is Novo Nordisk's semaglutide product carrying a weight-management label — the same molecule as Ozempic, but approved specifically for chronic weight management and dosed to a higher maintenance strength of 2.4mg. That label distinction is central to how it is priced and covered in Canada.
At retail, Wegovy is expensive: roughly $400 to $570 a month, with the maintenance dose landing at the top of that range, around $540 to $570. Because it is a weight-management drug, no provincial public plan covers it — public coverage of GLP-1s is limited to diabetes indications. Private employer plans are the main route to coverage, and only about 31% of them include GLP-1s for weight loss.
The WegovyCare patient-support program can reduce the cost to $149 a month for eligible patients, which is the single biggest lever on the brand's price. A generic referencing Wegovy is also now on the horizon, as covered below.
How it works
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It reduces appetite and slows stomach emptying through the same mechanism as Ozempic, but is titrated to a higher maintenance dose intended for weight management rather than blood-sugar control.

How it's taken
Wegovy is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection from a prefilled pen, taken on the same day each week with or without food. A prescriber sets the dose.
Poviztra, Sevmia and the coming generics
The semaglutide generic wave that reached Ozempic is now approaching Wegovy. Novo Nordisk has launched Poviztra, its own authorized generic of Wegovy. More significantly for competition, Health Canada approved Sevmia — Apotex's product and the first generic referencing Wegovy — on June 29, 2026. Its price has not yet been published, but generics almost always undercut the brand, so it is reasonable to expect it to come in below current Wegovy pricing once it reaches pharmacies.
