Rybelsus

Rybelsus is Novo Nordisk's oral form of semaglutide — the same molecule as Ozempic, delivered as a once-daily tablet instead of a weekly injection. It is approved in Canada for type 2 diabetes. For people who are needle-averse or simply prefer a pill, it is the main oral GLP-1 option on the market.

Rybelsus runs about $280 to $365 a month, with Costco typically at the lower end. That places it above generic injectable semaglutide on price, which is the central trade-off: you pay more for the convenience and format of a daily tablet than you would for a weekly generic injection of the same molecule.

Because it is a diabetes-labelled drug, some public plans cover it for diabetes under restricted criteria, but none cover it for weight loss.

Rybelsus delivers semaglutide orally using an absorption enhancer that helps the molecule survive the stomach. The active drug is the same GLP-1 receptor agonist as in Ozempic: it supports insulin release when blood sugar is high, slows stomach emptying and reduces appetite.

Rybelsus is a once-daily tablet. It is taken by mouth every day; a prescriber and pharmacist will explain the specific timing and food instructions that oral semaglutide requires.

Rybelsus is available at pharmacies nationwide. On public plans it can be covered for diabetes under limited-use or income-based rules — for example, it is a Limited Use benefit on Ontario's ODB and is covered by Quebec's RAMQ for diabetes — but not for weight management.

There is no generic oral semaglutide in Canada yet. The generic wave has reached injectable semaglutide, but Rybelsus remains brand-only for now, so the cheapest same-molecule route is currently the injectable generic rather than an oral generic.
